Object of research is the de-
\nvelopment of the MESEReT Ethiopian Sys-
\ntem for Education, Research and Teamwork
\n(MESEReT ), an ICT system motivated by the
\nconstruction of 13 universities spread across
\nEthiopia. By providing a reliable informa-
\ntion infrastructure, boundaries between dis-
\nparate educated countries shall be demol-
\nished. A decentralized approach is chosen
\nin order to provide unified campus services
\nthat cope with the temporary outage of sin-
\ngle network segments.<\/p>\n
Best practices
\nof test-driven software development (TDD) are adapted to
\nthe development of a networked system by the example of
\nMESEReT. We call this approach TDSD and start with speci-
\nfying the system in test cases and formal acceptance criteria.
\nAccording to a preliminary design, the MAREgadget toolbox
\nfor implementing and automating the tests are developed.
\nThen, we focus on a test-driven configuration and verifica-
\ntion of selected parts of MESEReT to approve our approach.
\nThe main development is conducted using the Testing Lab-
\noratory that is based on virtualization technology. In ad-
\ndition, a Demo Prototype is set up for presentation and to
\ntake performance measurements in order to verify perfor-
\nmance criteria of the specification.<\/p>\n
Virtualization technology perfectly fits the needs of func-
\ntional testing of a distributed system like
\nMESEReT. System testing is reduced to soft-
\nware testing so TDD concepts can be adapted
\nand even unmodified software testing tools
\ncan be utilized. Most tests can be run quickly
\nand fully unattended on a single computer
\n(laptop). Virtual disk snapshots provide quick
\nand complete means of fixture setup. A stan-
\ndard unit-testing framework manages the test
\nrun and returns handy results as we are used
